Specialist in rural livelihoods, agricultural and natural products value chains development

I have designed and implemented a series of targeted interventions based on integrated value chains development of agricultural, horticultural and natural products at the smallholder producer level, including sustainable use and resource management, capacity-building and institutional development. Market-based incentives for production and sustainable use through added value by rural producers include product development and diversification, product quality control, definition and elaboration of product quality standards at the regional and inter-governmental levels, and product certification systems for sustainable management and conservation of biodiversity at the landscape level. Products of specific focus include shea butter, gums and resins (frankincense, myrrh and gum Arabic), baobab, Balanites and Aloe.

Project appraisal and design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation

I have conducted value chain analyses, and sub-sectoral market studies and situation assessments, project appraisals, project inception baselines, mid-term evaluations and post project impact evaluations and ex-post evaluations based on institutional, costs-benefits and stakeholder analysis, have established project monitoring systems, and am adept at designing, planning and conducting monitoring and evaluation and impact studies and trainings.

Over 15 years of experience in project appraisal and program planning, project design and proposal development, donor negotiations, project implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and reporting to multiple donors (including the Common Fund for Commodities, the European Commission, USAID and private foundations) for projects focused on integrated rural development, agricultural and commodity development, rural livelihoods and food security, conservation and gender-equitable rural economic development. I have mobilized bilateral, multilateral and private funds of over $5.5 million in support of these activities.

Networking applied research on commodities and plant biodiversity, climate change, biofuels and food security

Implemented applied research programs on natural product value chains and rural livelihoods based on sustainable use and management of natural resources, including quantitative studies of plant biodiversity and the species-level impacts of specific management interventions. Since 2000, I have organised and facilitated a series of four major international conferences and consultative meetings on behalf of institutions including FAO and the CFC with full regional, inter-governmental and international participation on agricultural and natural products development, based on applied research in support of key technical aspects of the product value chain. I have developed institutional and individual partnerships with a wide range of regional and international research and development institutions, and have developed working linkages with community-based producer groups across Africa, and have edited or provided content to three CFC Technical Papers (numbers 21, 39 and 46) in collaboration with FAO, ICRAF and ICRISAT, have developed product quality grades and standards, and defined guidelines for sustainable production of biofuel feedstocks with reference to local food security.
